Bear Creek is a village in Hays County, Texas, United States. The population was 397 at the 2020 census. The village was established in November 1997. Bear Creek is located in northern Hays County. It is bordered to the north and east by the city of Austin and is 16 miles (26 km) by road southwest of downtown. The northern border of Bear Creek is the Travis County line, and the eastern border follows Ranch to Market Road 1826. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.0 km2), all land. Bear Creek, the village's namesake, passes 0.3 miles (0.48 km) south of the village limits and is part of the Onion Creek watershed, flowing to the Colorado River. Bear Creek, a farming and stock-raising community on a creek of the same name eight miles northwest of New Braunfels in the hills of central Comal County, was settled in the 1860s. A spring in the Balcones Fault furnishes water for game and livestock there. Bear Creek Game Reserve was chartered in 1924 for the protection and propagation of fish and game.
